CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — Southern Illinois track and field heads across the river this weekend for the Joey Haines Invitational, hosted by Southeast Missouri on Friday and Saturday.
The Salukis enter the meet looking to build momentum early in the outdoor season after a strong showing in their opening competition. This weekend provides another opportunity to sharpen performances and continue progress across both the men's and women's squads.
Action begins Friday with the hammer throw, scheduled for 3 p.m., where SIU's throwers will look to set the tone heading into the full slate of events.
Competition resumes Saturday with field events starting at 11 a.m., followed by track events at noon. Select events, including the pole vault and high jump, will be held inside the Student Recreation Center.
Director Richard Jones is ready for the next challenge.
"We get back to competition this week with some regional meets that will be pretty competitive and keep us on the right trajectory of preparation for the conference meet. Dealing with the elements presents some other challenges and we are hoping to survive the weather this weekend and get some good marks in. Springtime early season meets are somewhat unpredictable but the training has been going good so hopefully we get to showcase that this weekend."
