San Diego, Calif. -
Junior Alison Hller shot a 74 for 18-holes the first day of the Laday Aztec Spring Invitational and tied for second only three strokes behind Carrie Summerhays of BYU. Since the second round of 18-holes was rained out, Hiller remained tied for second and as a result, the Southern Illinois University Carbondale women's golf team garnered a 9th place finish among the field of 17.
The Salukis shot a 328 on the 6, 140-yard, par-72 Barona Creek Golf Course. Michigan and BYU finished tied for first with indentical scores of 311. SIU trailed third-place Kent State by only 11 strokes.
"I'm very encouraged," SIU women's coach Diane Daugherty said. "We hit the ball well, but we didn't score. The greens were very difficult and we had out share of three putts. We really didn't finish strong. But we were right in the thick of it. If we could have played the second round and could have got some of those scores down, I think we could have finished in the top five."
Following Hiller, Lizzie Uthoff tied at 48 with a score of 84 with Andrea Turner and Jennifer Shutt tied for 56 at 85 and Ashley Welch tied for 72 at 88.
