Evansville, Ind. - Don DeNoon's debut as head coach of both the women's and men's Southern Illinois University Carbondale cross country teams was an enjoyable one as the Salukis gained relatively easy victories at Southern Indiana's triangular affair Saturday morning in Evansville, Ind.
DeNoon, who has been SIU's women's cross country coach for 15 of the past 16 years, has taken over the men's squad as well this season, replacing the retired Bill Cornell.
The Saluki men monopolized second-through-sixth place finishes to conclude the event with just 20 points, far ahead of second-place Southern Indiana, who completed the four-mile course with 41 points. Missouri-Rolla finished third with 75.
Chris Owen, a senior from Salem, was SIU's second-place finisher with a time of 20:41, six seconds behind unattached runner Joey Byrne. Jon Jacob of Southern Indiana was the meet winner with a time of 20:37.
Joe Ziebert (21:00), Ryan Hauser (21:25), Andrew Warnsing (21:30) and Shane Kelly (21:37) completed SIU's scoring runners.
The Saluki women, meanwhile, had a slightly closer race, scoring just 23 points to second-place Southern Indiana's 32. Missouri-Rolla's women were third with 82.
Becky Cox, a senior from Jerseyville, and Katie Meehan, a sophomore from Sedalia, Mo., finished one-two for the Salukis in respective times of 15:19.09 and 15:28.09 over a 4K course.
SIU's other place-winners were Julia Roundtree (15:36.80), who finished fifth, Marissa Jelks (15:59.26), who was seventh and Tracy Lampert (16:10), who was eighth.
Both Saluki teams will return to action Friday, September 8 at the Bradley Invitational in Peoria, Ill.
