Jonesboro, Ark. -
Junior Alison Hiller of the Southern Illinois University Carbondale women's golf team missed taking the title at the Lady Indian Classic hosted by Arkansas State by only two strokes Tuesday.
"I'm exceptionally proud of Alison," SIU coach Diane Daugherty said. "She had such an outstanding freshman year winning three tournaments with a mid-70's scoring average and didn't play as well as she hoped last year. She was striking the ball very well this year, but just hadn't put the low numbers on the board. So I was very happy to see her put in all together."
Hiller, who was averaging 161 for season, shot an amazing 151 to finish just two strokes off the pace set by Nina Reis of North Texas. As a team, the Salukis finished ninth in a field of 16 for the two-day event with a team score 656. The Dawgs next action will be in the Arkansas-Little Rock Ladies Classic Oct. 16-17.
"To finish in the top ten in that field was great," Daugherty said. "Golf is a shot away from being five shots difference, especially with Andrea Turner and Jennifer Shutt that was where they were all the weekend."
Hiller opened the tournament shooting a 37 on the front nine and finished the first day with a 39 on the back nine for a first-round total of 76 and a tie for first with Reis and Leigh Ann Jones of Arkansas State.
The conditions were cold on the first day and improved somewhat on the second which proved favorable to Hiller who shot a round of 75 while Reis was two shots better with a 73 to take the title. Jones shot a 79 to fall back to a tie for ninth.
"Jennifer Shutt had a couple in the water the second day and ended up taking a seven on a par three," Daughtery said. "Andrea Turner had an eight on a par three the first day. So it's one shot here or there, or we're close to being a whole lot better than we are."
Liz Uthoff was next for the Dawgs finishing tied for 29 with a 162 followed by Shutt (T60-171), Megan Tarrolly (T64-173) and Turner (T74-178).
"Megan had her college debut," Daugherty said. "She came around and shot a 39 on the back nine the second day. So that was very positive because there is a big jump from high school golf and college golf."
Troy State won the tournament with a 627 followed by Arkansas State three strokes behind and Arkansas-Little Rock at 631 for third.
