The Southern Illinois University Carbondale men's and women's track teams travel for the first time this season, when they compete in the 27th Indiana Invitational in Bloomington, Indiana, on February 2 & 3.
The Saluki women finished second at the McDonald's Invitational last week and hope to have a similar performance to last year's fourth place finish at the 2000 Indiana Invitational.
"We have some kids like Caryn Poliquin and the distance runners performing well. We need our long and triple jumpers really step up and perform. If we compete like we're capable we should finish in the top five teams out of 16 schools," said Don DeNoon, Saluki women's track coach. "I hope Caryn can throw as well as last week (school record 59-4 1/4 weight throw), Noa Beitler can run a sub 2:10 in the 800 meters, Becky Cox runs a good mile, and Rimma Turevsky triple jumps well. Desiree Cocks will be back from injury to run the sprints and long jump."
The Saluki men improved to third at last week's McDonald's Invitational after a season opening fourth place finish at the Saluki Booster Invitational. The Salukis finished third at last season's Indiana Invitational and coach Cameron Wright is looking for better performances with the MVC Championships just three weeks from this weekend.
"We just need to continue to get better. With every meet we get closer to the MVC Championships and that meet is important, so we must keep competing harder each meet," said Cameron Wright, Saluki men's track coach. "The first meet on the road is always interesting, so I'm anxious to see how the athletes handle being out of their element and competing on the road. I want to see who will step up and I'd like to see every athlete get a personal best."
The 27th Indiana Invitational begins on Friday, February 2, at 4 p.m. with the women's shot put and will continue on Saturday, February 3, at 12 p.m. with the men's weight throw.
