Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Director of Athletics Paul Kowalczyk announced late Sunday plans to replace Jan Quarless as the Salukis' head football coach.
The decision followed a meeting earlier Sunday between Kowalczyk and Quarless and came within 24 hours of the completion of SIU's 2000 season.
"These decisions are extremely difficult to make because they affect the lives of a number of individuals and families, but we must move forward," Kowalczyk said. "We will conduct a national search for a new head coach to lead this program. My goal is to establish a model program with a winning tradition, one in which all of Southern Illinois will take pride. I ask for patience from the fans, support from the administration and trust from the players."
Quarless, who became SIU's 17th head football coach in January, 1997, completed his four-year, 44-game term Saturday when the Salukis lost, 22-0, at Western Kentucky.
His 3-8 record in 2000 was identical to marks his teams posted in 1997 and 1998 and followed last season's 5-6 record. Overall his clubs won 14, lost 30.
"There is no questioning Coach Q's work ethic, passion and desire to win. I wish him the best in his future endeavors," Kowalczyk added.
