After a pair of disappointing losses in their first two games of the season, Southern Illinois University's Salukis took out their frustrations on visiting Northern Iowa by handing the nationally ranked Panthers a stunning 34-14 setback.
SIU scored in every quarter and did not allow Northern Iowa's offense to cross the goal line until the final minute of the game.
Sophomore running back Tom Koutsos led the Salukis' offense with his second 100-yard plus rushing game of the season. Koutsos collected 168 yards on 37 carries and scored three touchdowns for the second game in a row.
SIU scored its first touchdown on a blocked punt before Koutsos put on his one-man show and scored three times on runs of 10, 1 and 15 yards.
The Salukis were out in front, 28-0, before UNI scored its first touchdown on a blocked punt return with 3:31 remaining in the third quarter.
SIU sophomore kicking specialist Scott Everhart put the game out of reach, however, when he hit two field goals in the fourth quarter to make it 34-7 before Northern Iowa's final score with :49 remaining.
Both teams are now 1-2 on the year.
