Wichita State Shocks SIU 80-64

Wichita State University (8-12, 6-6) connected on 11-of-23 three-pointers en route to a 80-64 win over Southern Illinois University Sunday in Missouri Valley Conference women's basketball at Levitt Arena.
Sims led all Shocker scorers with 23 points as she shot 50 percent (5-of-10) from the field and 5-of-9 from behind the arc as Wichita State posted its fifth straight win over SIU.
SIU was held to a mere eight points in the opening 13:14 of the first half as Wichita State connected on six three-pointers to fuel a 30-8 run which was capped off by a pair of free throws by Sims with 6:46 left to play. Five Shocker players netted at least one three-pointer during the spurt as Wichita State shot a sizzling 46 percent (6-of-13) from behind the arc. The Salukis then narrowed the margin to 17 on a jumper by Terica Hathaway (34-17) with 3:51 left, but WSU quickly answered with a pair of free throws by Sims (3:32) and field goals by Buckner (2:11) and Huggins (at the buzzer) to take a 40-21 halftime lead. The Salukis were whistled for 11 fouls to Wichita State's four. As a result, SIU shot 1-of-2 from the free throw line while WSU knocked down 12-of-14.
Wichita State converted five SIU turnovers into seven quick points in the first 4:37 of the second half to increase its lead to 47-25 with 15:23 left in the game. Three more treys (two by Sims) then helped WSU to a 10-4 run as the Shockers built their biggest lead of the game at 57-29 with 10:47 remaining. SIU then outscored WSU 30-10 in the next 8:17 to pull to within eight (67-59) with 2:30 to play. Hathaway (9), Kristine Abramowski (6), and Tiffany Crutcher (4) accounted for 19 points during the Saluki run. Trailing by eight, the Shockers then used 7-of-8 foul shots in the last minute of the game to help put the Salukis away for good at 80-64.
The Salukis were led by Hathaway who scored 22 points on 9-of-18 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. Abramowski also pitched in 10 to round out the Dawgs' top two scorers.
SIU, now 5-17, 2-11 on the season, will return home to host Drake on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 7:05 p.m. Following their matchup with the Bulldogs, the Salukis will then entertain Creighton on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 2:05 p.m.
