Despite cold and gusty conditions, Jennifer Shutt and the Southern Illinois University Carbondale women's golf team leads the field of 90 women and 14 teams by a sizable margin at the Seventh Annual Saluki Invitational played at Hickory Ridge Golf Course.
"It was a great day on a cold day," said Saluki coach Diane Daugherty. "314 is good any day and with the conditions we had today I'm extremely proud of my team and very proud of Jen's (Shutt) 74 which included a triple bogie. So she just played outstanding."
Shutt shot an opening round of 74 to lead her nearest competitor by three strokes while she and her teammates lead the field by seven strokes with a first day total of 314. The invitational concludes Monday beginning at 10 a.m. with a shotgun start.
The sophomore from Springfield shot tournament lows 36 on the front nine holes and 38 on the back nine to lead the field. Her nearest competitor is Candace Artz of Ohio University with a 77. Shutt?s teammates Alison Hiller and Lizzie Uthoff were not far behind tied for fifth with a score of 79 followed by Kendra Jo Hood and Amy Rankin tied for 14th (82), Ashley Welch tied for 29th (85), Andrea Turner tied for 35 (86) and Megan Tarrolly tied for 45th (88).
"We showed how deep we are as a team with our range being from 74 to 88," Daugherty said. "We had three golfers under 80 and another five under 90 so that is pretty good. But it is just halftime and we still have to go out and play the course as we find it tomorrow Hickory Ridge is a tough and difficult golf course especially when it is cold and the wind is up like this. So you have to hit good shots and if you hit a bad shot a triple bogie can jump up and grab you at any time."
Bradley is second at 321 followed by Ohio (323), Southwest Missouri State (333), Northern Iowa (338), Illinois State (339), Eastern Michigan (339), Murray State (339), Eastern Illinois (346), Creighton (354), Missouri-Kansas City (359), Ferris State (367), Evansville (369) and Rend Lake College (370). Former Lady Terrier Megan Mosel, who plays for Rend Lake College, finished the first round with a score of 105.
