Seniors Marta Viefhaus, Amanda Rexroat and Julie Meier each scattered two hits apiece to lead Southern Illinois University to a split with Southeast Missouri State winning the first game 5-0 and losing the second 4-0 Tuesday at IAW Fields.
The shutout in the nightcap put a halt to a seven-game home winning streak for SIU as the Dawgs fell to 15-8 on the season.
In the first game, Southern Illinois jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second when two Otahkian errors scored Adie Viefhaus and a Rexroat single drove home M. Viefhaus consecutively. The Salukis would get two more runs in the fifth when Rexroat was driven home on a Erin Stremsterfer triple who would later score on a wild pitch to give SIU a 4-0 advantage. A M. Viefhaus single in the bottom of the sixth then allowed Chiara Calvetti to cross the plate after she previously reached on a single to slam the door on the 5-0 shutout.
M. Viefhaus was 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI, while Rexroat went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Stremsterfer took the win on the mound to move to 11-2 on the season. In seven innings pitched, Stremsterfer struck out eight batters while allowing five hits.
Southeast Missouri's hitting game then caught fire to open the second game as Renee Enos hit a two-run home run in the top of the first to give the Otahkians a quick 2-0 lift. After the Salukis went three-up-three-down in their at-bat in the bottom half of the frame, SE Missouri's Reagan Hamlin then dug in and blasted a solo home run to center to lead off the top of the second. Following both home runs, which were hit off of SIU freshman hurler Mary Jaszczak, head coach Kerri Blaylock then moved to replace Jaszczak with sophomore Katie Kloess. Jaszczak lasted only one inning as she was touched for three earned runs in six batters faced.
The Otahkians would get one more run in the top of the sixth when a throwing error by second baseman Tahira Saafir enabled Jenny Doehring to score capping off the 4-0 win.
Meier went 2-for-3 to lead SIU at the plate as the Salukis combined for a silent four hits. Jaszczak lost the decision on the mound falling to 1-3 on the season.
