TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Southern Illinois University softball team (20-13 overall, 9-4 MVC) swept its Sunday doubleheader at Indiana State, winning by final scores of 6-1 in game one and 10-4 in game two.
Across the two games, SIU scored a combined 16 runs with 21 hits. Sophomore Sage Grann led the way with a 5-for-7 day that saw the outfielder hit her first-career home run and tally five runs and two RBI. Junior Emily Williams went deep twice and had a team-high six RBI. Fellow junior Sydney Potter also homered and had four RBI and one double.
Freshmen Brooklynn Danielson (7-1) and Hailey Lucas (5-6) earned the two wins on Sunday. Both went the distance, as Danielson allowed one run with three strikeouts in game one and Lucas allowed four runs with four strikeouts in game two.
Game One: 6-1 win at Indiana State
The day started with a memorable moment for sophomore outfielder Sage Grann who, with one out in the first inning, hit her first-career home run. In a 2-1 count, Grann launched the fourth pitch she saw over the right field wall to give Southern Illinois a 1-0 lead.
Indiana State produced a pair of baserunners in the bottom of the first, but both were stranded after Danielson recorded a strikeout and fly out.
Southern Illinois would strike again in the top of the third. After a lead-off single by Grann and an Indiana State error, Potter crushed a three-run home run to left field to make it 4-0 in favor of SIU. The junior is up to 15 home runs, the third-most in a single season in program history. Potter is one away from tying Jackie Lis (2024) for second all-time and two away from tying the program record.
After a couple more scoreless innings from Danielson, SIU added another insurance run in the fifth off the bat of Williams. The junior hit a solo home run to left center, extending the advantage to 5-0.Â
In the bottom of the fifth, Danielson posted her second 1-2-3 inning of the game, finishing off the frame with a strikeout.
With two outs in the following inning, Potter hit an RBI double to left center to bring home Grann and make it 6-0.
The Sycamores scored their first run of the day in the bottom of the sixth, but went down 1-2-3 in the seventh, leading to Southern Illinois finishing off the 6-1 win.
Game Two: 10-4 win at Indiana State
Southern Illinois' success offensively continued in game two, scoring 10 runs on 13 hits. Six of those 10 runs came in the top of the second inning, starting with Amanda Knutson scoring on a sacrifice bunt by Erin Lee.
Mikaela Coburn proceeded to score on an RBI single by Maleah Blomenkamp, making it 2-0. After Blomenkamp stole second and Grann walked, Williams crushed a grand slam to left center to give Southern Illinois a 6-0 lead.
The junior now has 10 home runs and 36 RBI on the year.
Indiana State tallied one run in the second and another in the third before SIU struck for two in the top of the fourth. Grann singled to score Lee, making it 7-2. One batter later, the sophomore outfielder came around to score on a Williams RBI single.
The Sycamores cut the deficit to four with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Southern Illinois answered this blow with another pair of runs as Kurtz drove in Knutson and Blomenkamp drove in Sarah Cook, giving SIU a 10-4 lead.
Lucas preserved this lead for the remainder of the game, holding Indiana State scoreless in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to secure the 10-4 win for the Salukis.
