Cape Girardeau, Mo. - Senior Netty Hallahan went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, three runs scored and four RBI while Erin Stremsterfer went 3-for-3 with a double one RBI and one run scored to lead Southern Illinois University to a 11-0 bashing over Southeast Missouri State (16-18) Monday afternoon in non-league action at Southeast Softball Complex.
SIU, who was batting just .208 prior to Monday's game, hit three home runs and three doubles en route to tying a season high 11 hits which was also done against Western Kentucky (Apr. 11) earlier this season. The win also marked the Salukis' third of the season that was decided in six or less innings as it lasted just one hour and four minutes.
Hallahan hit a lead off double in the top of the first inning before Julie Meier delivered a two-out bullet over the leftfield wall to give the Salukis a quick 2-0 lead. SIU would then get one more run in the third when Meier scored on a two-out double to center compliments of Stremsterfer.
Up 3-0, the best was yet to come as Tahira Saafir singled to lead off the top of the fourth. Following a Chiara Calvetti strikeout, Johnston City, Ill., freshman Tara Glasco drew a walk to give the Dawgs runners at first and second with one out. Hallahan then delivered a rocket which easily cleared the wall in right center to make it 6-0. The three-run blast marked Hallahan's third of the season.
Still not finished, SIU would get five more runs in the fifth when a Stremsterfer single led off what would be the final Saluki threat of the game. After Jen Guenther and Saafir each flied out, a crucial error by second baseman Emmy Kisaka put Calvetti on first to give the Salukis a pair of baserunners with two out. Glasco and Hallahan then smacked back-to-back singles to score both Stremsterfer and Calvetti before H. Viefhaus sent a two-run shot sailing over the rightfield fence to complete the 11-0 thumping.
Hallahan narrowly hit for the cycle needing a triple to establish the feat. Glasco's hit and RBI marked the first in her career as a Saluki, while Meier's and Viefhaus' home runs were also firsts this season. Stremsterfer, who pitched a no-hitter through two innings, was touched for just two hits while striking out seven batters to move to 21-4 on the season.
SIU, now 29-12, will return to action on Wednesday when the Salukis travel to Evansville, Ind., to face MVC foe the University of Evansville in a doubleheader at 5 p.m.
