CARBONDALE, Ill. -
Southern Illinois University Carbondale volleyball coach Sonya Locke announced the 2001 schedule and the Salukis will have a challenging season in 2001. SIU will play matches against two 2000 NCAA Tournament teams (Sacramento State & San Jose State) in its first three matches at the Oregon State University Showcase in Corvallis, Oregon and five NCAA Tournament teams overall.
"We have a really fun schedule in 2001. We are going to the Oregon State Showcase to open the season against two California schools that played in the NCAA Tournament last year," said Saluki head coach Sonya Locke. "It should be very rewarding trip for our team."
In addition to NCAA Tournament teams Sacramento State and San Jose State, the Salukis will also play NCAA tourney veterans Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and perennial league champion Northern Iowa.
"We will have to play steady volleyball to start the season and I hope that competition prepares us for the Missouri Valley Conference season," Locke added.
"We start the MVC season with Northern Iowa and I think we'll be well prepared going into the MVC season after facing four NCAA Tournament teams and Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis (IUPUI), a team that won the regular season Mid-Continent Conference title and lost in its tournament."
The Salukis finished 8-22, 1-17 in MVC after the 2000 season but will return all seven athletes that started over the course of the year. The returners include junior Kristie Kemner, a second team all-mvc outside hitter and senior middle blocker Jenny Noel, a two-year starter.
