Southern Illinois University senior pitcher/designated player Erin Stremsterfer was named third-team Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-American, announced Thursday morning.
Stremsterfer, who was one of 19 members selected to this year's third-team, became just the third player in SIU softball history to garner the prestigious award.
For Stremsterfer, the All-American honor added the icing to a remarkable 2001 season and stellar four-year career at SIU. Also a first-team all-Great Lakes Region pick , the Manchester, Mo., native finished the 2001 campagn as the Salukis' leader in earned run average (0.97), wins (28), shutouts (11), saves (4), strikeouts (364), batting average (.314), hits (48), doubles (9), home runs (8), RBI (27), total bases (85) and slugging percentage (.556). In addition, she became both the Valley's single season strikeout leader and SIU's career home run queen while ranking nationally in four categories.
Stremsterfer is SIU's first softball All-American since 1997 when pitcher Jamie Schuttek took the honor. Outfielder Colleen Holloway (1991) then rounds out the school's elite trio of third-team All-Americans.
