Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois University Carbondale (3-6, 1-2 MVC) swept Wichita State (4-5, 1-2) at home 30-26, 30-24, 30-19 on Friday, September 21 to win its first MVC match of the year.
"I told them in the locker room that they are a good team and we played like a good team tonight. We handled everything with a lot of patience and when we do that we're going to win and we can beat anybody," stated Sonya Locke, Salukis head coach. "Our serving was highly effective and we had to serve well to take out their middle hitting option and we did that. I hope that winning at home can carry over to the next game and our road matches. Tomorrow against SMS is important and I hope the great crowd comes back. The crowd really helped us tonight."
SIU setter Megan Baumstark led the Salukis with a career-high .875 (7 kills, no errors, 8 attempts), dished out 40 assists and had 10 digs for a double-double. Lindsey Schultz kept up her torrid hitting with a .700 night (8 kills, 1 error, 10 attempts), Qiana Nelson hit .563 (9 kills, no errors, 16 attempts) and Kristie Kemner added a .438 night (16 kills, 2 errors, 32 attempts).
SIU out hit (.441 to .236), out blocked (10 to 7) and out defended (37 digs to 24) the Shockers. The hitting percentage was the best all season for the Salukis.
"When we hit .250 or better we usually win unless we are really out hit. Our serving had a lot to do with us hitting so high tonight," added Locke.
Southern Illinois will host Southwest Missouri State on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Davies Gym.
