SIU Falls To Illinois State In Five-Game Match

Normal, Ill. - Southern Illinois University Carbondale (4-9, 1-5 MVC) went five games with Illinois State (7-4, 3-1 MVC) at Redbird Arena before losing its fifth MVC match of the year 3-2. The Redbirds won 33-35, 30-20, 24-30, 30-25, 15-3 on Saturday, September 29 in Normal, Illinois.
The Salukis fell behind 12-1 in game five after ISU's Becky Weber served the first five points of the game and Jenny Kabbes added four kills and two blocks to put the game out of reach before winning 15-3 to take the match.
Kristie Kemner and Megan Baumstark led SIU with double-double performances. Kemner's night included 17 kills, 22 digs, an ace and a block assist while Baumstark passed out 52 assists with 10 digs, 5 kills and 2 block assists. Tara Cains had a solid match with 15 kills, 7 digs, 5 block assists, 4 assists, 2 aces and a solo block and Lindsey Schultz had another phenomenal hitting performance, finishing with 12 kills, 2 errors and 21 attempts for a .476 percentage in addition to 5 digs and 3 block assists.
SIU's Kelly Harman tied a career-high with 11 kills and added 7 digs and a block assist. Jenny Noel chipped in 8 kills, 7 digs, 6 block assists, 2 solo blocks, an ace and an assist. Lisa Vodin added a career-high 16 digs in the loss.
Despite winning two games SIU hit just .096, including a -.231 in the game five 15-3 loss, while the Redbirds only managed .185 in the win. Illinois State had 17 blocks to 12 for the Salukis, 91 digs to 83 and 12 aces to SIU's 6.
SIU will travel to Murray State on Tuesday, October 2 in a non-conference game in Murray, Kentucky at 7 p.m.
