CARBONDALE -- - Coming off NCAA qualifying standards and first-place performances in their respective events last weekend at the McDonald's Invitational, Southern Illinois University track and field athletes Latrice Gray and Jaanus Uudmae have been named Missouri Valley Conference "Field Athletes of the Week."
Gray, a senior from Woodale, set an indoor personal-best in the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 9 1/4 inches. That mark automatically qualified the 2001 MVC indoor and outdoor high jump champion for NCAA Indoor Nationals, to be held March 8th and 9th. Gray qualified for outdoor nationals last season and placed 14th. Gray's mark ranks second on the all-time SIU indoor high jump list.
Uudmae, a freshman from Tallinn, Estonia, met an NCAA provisional qualifying standard for the second time this season in the triple jump with a leap of 51 feet, 3 1/2 inches. After just three meets as a Saluki, Uudmae is already No. 3 on the SIU all-time triple jump list.
Each of these athlete's performances helped the Saluki men and women's teams to first-place finishes.
