Normal, Ill. - Illinois State's winning streak over Southern Illinois climbed to 24 matches Friday night as the Redbirds swept SIU at Redbird Arena 30-20, 36-34, 30-27. The Salukis are now tied with Illinois State in league play with a 6-4 record.
Southern Illinois buckled under the pressure of not being able to win against Illinois State since 1990.
"I thought we were flat tonight," said head coach Sonya Locke. "We just didn't play well. I think we put too much pressure on ourselves, and it's sad. Hopefully, we will get another chance to play them at the conference tournament, and the next time we will play to win."
Senior Kristie Kemner (OH, Quincy, Ill., Quincy Notre Dame HS) tied the all-time kill-dig double-double record at SIU by earning her 53rd for her career with 16 kills and 15 digs. Senior Tara Cains (RS, LaPorte, Ind., LaPorte HS) had 10 kills on 20 attempts with two errors (.400), and added three blocks. Qiana Nelson (senior, Kankakee, Ill., Kankakee HS) had 10 digs and eight kills, while teammate Lindsey Schultz (senior, Valparaiso, Ind., Wheeler HS) posted eight kills and four blocks. She also served two aces.
Setter Britten Follett (junior, Marengo, Ill., Marengo HS) had seven digs and 36 assists. She held a .400 hitting percentage with five kills on 10 attempts with one error.
Illinois State's Erin Jones put down 24 kills for the Redbirds. Staci Boyce and Jenny Kabbes each added 11 kills. Kabbes led the Redbirds with a dozen digs.
SIU (15-7) will play at Indiana State (11-8, 5-5 MVC) Saturday night at 7 p.m.
