Volleyball Downs Drake In Three Games

Carbondale, Ill. - The Salukis had a balanced defensive and offensive mix that Drake couldn't handle as SIU swept the Bulldogs Saturday night 30-23, 30-21, 30-27. Southern Illinois moves its record to 18-7 overall and 9-4 in Missouri Valley Conference action.
Southern Illinois outblocked Drake ten to eight and a half. SIU hit over .300 for the second match in a row, .318 to Drake's .147.
"It's a good sign to hit well as a team," said coach Sonya Locke. "That's something we are going to want to continue to do. I wish we could have played a little more crisp, but we did what we had to do to win."
Kristie Kemner (senior, OH, Quincy, Ill., Quincy Notre Dame HS) led the Salukis with 15 kills and 13 digs. She also had three block assists. Middle blocker Lindsey Schultz (senior, Valparaiso, Ind., Wheeler HS) put down 11 kills on 21 attempts with two errors for a .429 hitting percentage. She had seven blocks, three solo and four assists. Qiana Nelson (senior, OH, Kankakee, Ill., Kankakee HS) added 10 digs and nine kills.
Tara Cains (senior, RS, LaPorte, Ind., LaPorte HS) knocked down seven kills and was .417 accurate. Carrie Shephard (sophomore, MB, Overland Park, Kan., Blue Valley North HS) hit .800 with four kills on five attempts.
Britten Follett (junior, S, Marengo, Ill., Marengo HS) dished out 46 assists.
Drake's Stacy Boerema led the Bulldogs with 14 kills (.321).
SIU goes on the road this next weekend to Bradley and (#10)Northern Iowa for conference matches.
