Volleyball Defeats Missouri Valley Conference Leader Bradley

Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois took advantage of their opportunity to play Bradley at home Saturday night in Davies Gym. The Salukis knocked off the number one team in the Missouri Valley Conference in five games.
The Salukis earned the 37-35 victory in game one on the tenth game point. SIU won the second game 30-23. The Braves came back and took the next two games 30-21, 30-24. Southern Illinois posted a 15-10 victory in the fifth game by holding the Braves to a zero hitting percentage.
Senior Kristie Kemner set a school record for the second night in a row by recording 74 attack attempts in the match. The old record was held by Heather Herdes (1995) and Dana Olden (1990) with 71 attempts. Kemner had a match high 30 kills and added 22 digs.
Britten Follett (junior, S, Marengo, Ill., Marengo HS) had a career high 69 assists.
Outside hitter Qiana Nelson hit .400 for the Salukis with 18 kills on 40 attempts and two errors. She also had 20 digs and four block assists. Lindsey Schultz recorded a .308 hitting percentage with 17 kills on 39 attacks and five errors. Lisa Ciucci (junior, L, Portage, Mich., Portage Northern HS) and Erica Miller (sophomore, DS, Middleybury, Ind.) collected 14 and 13 digs, respectively, for the Salukis.
Carrie Shephard (sophomore, MB, Overland Park, Kan., Blue Valley North HS) had eight block assists.
Southern Illinois hit .254 to Bradley's .225. Both teams posted 76 assists, and SIU recorded two more digs than the Braves (89, 87). However, Bradley doubled SIU on blocks, 20-10.
Bradley holds a 12-4 record overall and is 6-1 in conference action. The Salukis move to 12-6 overall and 5-3 in the conference. They will travel to Evansville, Ind., for the Evansville Aces Invitational this weekend.
