Kemner Helps Volleyball To Victory Over Bradley

Peoria, Ill. - Senior outside hitter Kristie Kemner (Quincy, Ill., Quincy Notre Dame HS) guided Southern Illinois University to a 3-1 win over Bradley Friday night with scores of 30-25, 23-30, 30-25, 31-29 as she became SIU's all-time career kill leader, putting down 28 kills to take over the school record.
Kemner now has 1,550 kills in her career replacing Dana Olden's (1989-92) record of 1,545. Kemner also recorded her 56th kill-dig double-double by adding 26 digs to her evening. She posted a .344 hitting percentage on 61 attack attempts and had two ace serves.
"Kristie had a great match," said head coach Sonya Locke. "She set us on fire. We played very good tonight. It was a hard fought match."
SIU held a decent lead in game four, but Bradley came back to tie it at 29's. Southern Illinois had 70 kills, 18 more than the Braves.
Qiana Nelson (senior, OH, Kankakee, Ill., Kankakee HS) earned her 11th double-double recording 15 kills and digs. Nelson also served two aces. Lindsey Schultz (senior, MB, Valparaiso, Ind., Wheeler HS) knocked down 14 kills. Junior libero Lisa Ciucci (Portage, Mich., Portage Northern HS) had 12 digs.
Carrie Shephard (sophomore, MB, Overland Park, Kan., Blue Valley North HS) had a career high nine blocks, two solo and seven assists. She also had two aces. Junior setter Britten Follett (Marengo, Ill., Marengo HS) dished out 59 assists and had eight digs.
Yoko Hattori (senior, DS, Chiba, Japan, Chiba HS) served three aces and had seven digs. Tara Cains (senior, OH, LaPorte, Ind., LaPorte HS) charted nine kills and four block assists.
"Hopefully this will give us the momentum we need when we face Northern Iowa tomorrow night," said Locke.
The Salukis now post a 19-7 overall record and are 10-4 in league play. They will face No. 8-ranked Northern Iowa (23-2, 12-1) tomorrow night at the West Gym in Cedar Falls, Iowa, at 7 p.m.
