Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois University's head volleyball coach Sonya Locke announced Thursday morning the signing of five high school players to a national letter of intent.
"They're collectively going to be a dynamic group," said Locke. "They are all good students and good people. We're excited they chose SIU. They were all being recruited by lots of other schools, and fortunately, they decided on SIU."
Kathryn Dewulf, a 6-1 middle blocker from nearby Murphysboro, broke school records for career kills (1,226) and total blocks in a season (126) this year. She helped her team to a school record finish of 32-6 last season in which the team won the school's first Class AA regional title. Dewulf was a three-time all-conference selection and an all-SIRR Ohio pick all four years. She was named the team MVP twice.
Haley Hann is a 6-1 middle blocker/right side hitter from Chatfield High School, Littleton, Colo. She has played with one of the United States Junior National elite club teams, the Colorado Juniors.
Jen? Pulliam is a 5-10 outside hitter out of Rockford Lutheran High School, Rockford, Ill. She also played for junior national club team Club Fusion which won a regional title.
Ashley Saverine, a 5-10 outside hitter from Brookfield Central High School, Brookfield, Wis., was a member of the 2001 runner-up junior national championship team with the Milwaukee Sting in the 17 and under division.
Johannah Yutzy, a 6-0 middle blocker, was an all-state first team selection and was named district player of the year. She hails from Plain City, Ohio, and has played for Southern Ohio Juniors club team.
"There are going to be high expectations placed on them," said Locke. "They are going to attempt to fill in the gaps of the great group of seniors we have this year."
