Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois stunned SMS with a 3-1 victory over the Bears Friday night in Davies Gym with scores of 30-16, 18-30, 30-28, 30-24. SIU, currently third in the Missouri Valley Conference, has not beaten SMS, the number two team, since 1998.
Senior outside hitter Kristie Kemner (Quincy, Ill., Notre Dame HS) captured the single season kills record by putting down 28 against the Bears. She has 509 this season. Kemner finished with a .344 hitting percentage and added 18 digs for her 57th double-double. She also had three assists and two blocks, one solo and one assist.
SIU hit .335 to the Bears' .232. The Salukis came out on fire in the first game hitting .487, and they finished the fourth game with a .404 hitting percentage.
Middle blocker Lindsey Schultz (senior, Valparaiso, Ind., Wheeler HS) knocked down 16 kills on 29 attempts with three errors for a .448 hitting percentage. Schultz had one service ace, one solo block, and three digs.
Setter Britten Follett (junior, Marengo, Ill., Marengo HS) fell one short of a triple double. Follett had nine kills (.400), 14 digs, and 61 assists. She also had one block assist and one solo block.
Qiana Nelson (senior, OH, Kankakee, Ill., Kankakee HS) led the team in digs with 20, and added 12 kills for her 12th career double-double.
Libero Lisa Ciucci (junior, Portage, Mich., Portage Northern HS) collected 14 digs, and Yoko Hattori (senior, DS, Chiba, Japan, Chiba HS) had 10.
Tara Cains (senior, OH, LaPorte, Ind., LaPorte HS) recorded a .250 hitting percentage with 12 kills. She had five assists and two block assists. Middle blocker Carrie Shephard (sophomore, Overland Park, Kan., Blue Valley North HS) led the team with four block assists. She also hit .250 with four kills, and had one ace serve, and three digs.
The Salukis improved their record to 21-8 and 12-5 in the Valley. SMS has a 20-6 overall mark and are 14-3 in league play.
SIU hosts Wichita State Saturday at 7 p.m. in Davies Gym. Admission is $1.00 with a donation of a non-perishable food item.
