Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois University women's golf coach Diane Daugherty announced today the signing of Samantha Sutzer. Sutzer, a native of Springfield, Ill., signed with the Salukis after having visited Illinois State, Northern Illinois and Bradley.
Sutzer joins the Salukis from Sacred Heart Griffin High School where she was named all-conference in each of her four prep years. Also a two-time State Journal-Register Girl's Golfer of the Year, Sutzer finished as high as third in the state as a senior. In addition, she was the Central State Eight Conference medalist three seasons in a row.
What attracted Sutzer to SIU was the atmosphere and where the team has recently competed. Last month, the Salukis played at the Rainbow Golf Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii. SIU will also travel to tournaments in Miami, Tampa and Winter Springs, Fla., this spring.
"I loved the campus, and the coach and team were welcoming," said Sutzer in a statement released by The State Journal-Register. "I just felt most comfortable there, and that's what it came down to. I don't think everybody gets to travel around the country and play golf. I'll get to see parts of the world I've never seen."
Sutzer is the first SHG girl's golfer to earn a Division I scholarship since Kelly Anders signed with Kentucky in 1998.
"I'm thrilled to get Samantha," said Daugherty. "She is a very experienced player who has sound fundamentals. She is a good ball-striker and I think that she'll have a great career here."
