Volleyball Falls to Eighth-Ranked Northern Iowa In Three

Cedar Falls, Iowa - Southern Illinois fell quickly to (#8)Northern Iowa in three games Saturday night in a hour and five minutes. The Salukis made it a close first game but came away with a 30-28 loss. The Panthers dominated the next two games 30-10 and 30-19.
"We didn't put ourselves in a situation to do well," said coach Sonya Locke.
Northern Iowa outdid the Salukis in every category recording 50 kills to SIU's 26, 45 assists to Southern Illinois' 25, and blocking 17 attack attempts to SIU's three. SIU hit negative .037 on the night to Northern Iowa's .301. The Panther's Michelle Burvee hit a sizzling .563 with 10 kills. Molly O'Brien led all players with 17 kills hitting .500.
"You're never going to win a match hitting negative," said Locke. "Northern Iowa is a good team, and they showed that tonight."
Junior setter Britten Follett (Marengo, Ill., Marengo HS) had 19 assists, nine digs, and two block assists. Lindsey Schultz (senior, MB, Valparaiso, Ind., Wheeler HS) led SIU with eight kills. She added one solo block and one block assist. Senior Kristie Kemner (OH, Quincy, Ill., Quincy Notre Dame HS) had six kills, eight digs, and one ace serve.
SIU's record is now 19-8 overall and 10-5 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Northern Iowa increased its record to 24-2 and 13-1 in league play. Southern Illinois will host Evansville Saturday.
