Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois recorded its 20th win this season by sweeping Evansville Saturday night in a quick hour and 15 minute match with scores of 30-12, 30-27, 30-22. It's head coach Sonya Locke's first 20-win season at SIU. The Salukis now post a 20-8 season record and are 11-5 in league play.
"I'm going to ride this wave that got us to 20 wins," said Locke. "This is a nice feeling."
Kristie Kemner (senior, OH, Quincy, Ill., Quincy Notre Dame HS) broke another school record as she became SIU's single season attack attempt leader recording 29 attempts for 1200 this year. The old record was held by Marlo Moreland with 1180 set in 1996. Kemner led the offense with 12 kills at hit .310. She added nine digs, three aces, and two assists.
"I think it's a milestone along the way," said Kemner. "It gives someone else something to shoot for. I couldn't have done this without the good play of the team."
The Salukis hit .211 to the Aces' .019 hitting percentage.
Senior Lindsey Schultz (MB, Valparaiso, Ind., Wheeler HS) had nine kills with a .353 hitting percentage. Britten Follett (junior, S, Marengo, Ill., Marengo HS) had eight digs, 25 assists, five kills (.364), and one block assist.
Lisa Ciucci (junior, L, Portage, Mich., Portage Northern HS) guided the defense with 10 digs.
Erica Miller (sophomore, DS, Middlebury, Ind., Northridge HS) and Yoko Hattori (senior, DS, Chiba, Japan, Chiba HS) each had two ace serves.
Erica Haukap led Evansville with six kills on 11 attempts with no errors for a .545 accuracy. She had 16 assists, four digs, and two blocks, one solo and one assist.
"We kept their middle attack out of the offense," commented Locke. "We also served very well."
Southern Illinois rounds out regular season play next weekend hosting Southwest Missouri State and Wichita State in Missouri Valley Conference action.
