Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois University setter Britten Follett was one of six individuals nationwide named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-America Volleyball First Team.
Follett became the first volleyball player in school history to receive the Verizon award, and the fourth Academic All-American overall. Former players Jill Broker (1983), Lisa Cummins (1985) and Martha Fimhaber (1990, 1991) earned GTE Academic All-America First Team status.
A senior who majors in radio and television, Follett maintains a perfect 4.0 grade point average. This season, she helped SIU to its best record in 17 years as the Salukis finished 23-10 overall and third in the Missouri Valley Conference at 12-6. SIU advanced to the championship match of the State Farm MVC Tournament, where they were defeated by #9 Northern Iowa.
"What she accomplished and what the team accomplished this year is very exciting," said coach Sonya Locke. "Recognition for your hard work is a great feeling. She deserves it."
Follett broke SIU's single-season assist record with 1,444 assists in 2002. She ranks eighth on SIU's career list with 1,531. Follett averaged 11.93 assists per game, 1.98 digs, .43 blocks, and 1.16 kills per game, while hitting at a .296 clip this season. She was also named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team.
"It's a great honor," said Follett. "It's something to be recognized nationally, not only for volleyball, but academically as well. I've worked hard, and it's paid off. It's nice to be rewarded."
