CARBONDALE - More than 650 athletes from 23 different schools will convene at the Southern Illinois Unviersity Recreation Center Friday and Saturday as the Saluki men's and women's track and field teams will host the USA Open.
The final meet before the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships will kick off on Friday night, with the men's weight throw at 6 p.m., followed by the women's weight throw at 7:30 p.m. A full slate of action will take place on Saturday, starting with the women's shot put, pole vault, long jump and 55-meter dash preliminaries at 9 a.m., and concluding with the men's 4x400-meter relay at 6:35 p.m.
Among the 23 teams competing will be regional rivals Southeast Missouri State, Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville and Saint Louis. The Salukis will also be seeing a few teams that they have not competed against yet this indoor season, such as Vanderbilt.
The meet will be the final warm-up for several Salukis looking to make noise at next weekend's MVC Indoor Championships. SIU record-holders Adam Judge and Jeff Young are the top seeds in the weight throw and 60-meter hurdles, respectively, as are Latrice Gray (high jump) Gaute Myklebust (shot put), Nyles Stuart (long jump) and Doron Giat (mile).
