Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois (4-17, 0-12) takes to the road for its second to last two-game swing of the 2001-02 campaign this weekend. The Salukis will first play at Indiana State (9-13, 5-8) tomorrow night (6 p.m.).
Currently on a 14-game losing streak, SIU will look to avoid a Sycamore sweep as Indiana State took this year's first meeting, 71-65, on Jan. 17 in Carbondale. If Indiana State wins, the Sycamores will become the fourth Valley school to blank the Salukis this season.
With six games remaining this season, SIU has yet to win a conference game as the Salukis sit in last place in the Valley with an overall record of 4-17, 0-12. Recently coming off a 69-57 loss to Southwest Missouri State last Sunday, the Salukis head into Friday's game led by the backcourt tandem of Molly McDowell and Holly Teague. McDowell leads all scorers with 12.8 points per game, while Teague follows close behind with 12.5.
Indiana State, on the other hand, stands in eighth place among league foes with a record of 9-13, 5-8. The Sycamores are led by junior guard Kourtney Mennen. Mennen, who leads the league in scoring, is averaging 20.0 points per game. She is followed by Kristin Stewart (12.4 ppg) and April Kirby (10.5 ppg) who round out Indiana State's top three averaging doubles.
SIU leads the overall series with Indiana State, 37-18, since originating in 1969. Dating back to 1999, however, the Sycamores have won their previous six of seven games over the Salukis, including the last four straight. SIU last beat Indiana State, 64-62, on Dec. 29, 1999 in Terre Haute.
