St. Louis, Mo. - Southern Illinois University junior catcher Toby Barnett was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week late on Monday, February 25. The award is the first for the junior college transfer from the College of Southern Idaho.
"Toby has a great attitude and a strong work ethic. It's a nice reward and well deserved. He's been a tremendous asset to our program in just a short period of time," said Dan Callahan, Saluki head coach. "He's been a solid force in our lineup at the cleanup spot and is off to a great start."
Barnett hit .461 (6-for-13) last week with a double, three RBI and three runs. In the SIU win over #4 Notre Dame he was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Barnett, a Kallaroo, W. Austrailia native, is hitting .435 (10-for-23) with three doubles and six RBI. He has a .565 slugging percentage and a .483 on-base percentage for the year.
The Salukis are currently 4-2 on the season.
