CARBONDALE - For the second consecutive weekend the Southern Illinois University men's and women's track and field teams will be competing at separate road meets, as the Saluki women will travel to Butler University for the Cannon Classic and the men will venture to Iowa State University for the ISU Classic. Both meets will be two-day affairs, starting on Friday.
The Iowa State Classic will be the largest meet the Saluki men have competed in so far this indoor season, as competitors from over 50 schools and independent teams will gather at the Lied Recreation Center in Ames.
Action will get underway at 3:30 p.m. Friday with field event competition and conclude for the day at 6:30 p.m. with the men's 200 meter dash. Saturday's competition begins at 10 a.m. with the men's 3,000-meter run and more field events, concluding at 6:40 p.m. with the men's 4x400 meter relay.
The Cannon Classic will kick off Friday at 6 p.m. with the men's and women's shot put and conclude later that night with the fourth section of the men's 5,000-meter run at 10:35 p.m. Action will resume on Saturday at 10:15 a.m. with the men's and women's pole vault. There will then be a long break before the meet resumes at 4:30 p.m. with the mens' and women's high jump and concludes late in the evening with the third section of the men's 3,000-meter run at 11:15 p.m.
Teams competing in the Cannon Classic include: Indianapolis, McKendree College, Western Michigan, Eastern Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Illinois, Indiana State, Northern Illinois, Illinois-Chicago, Northern Illinois, Eastern Michigan, Marquette, Kentucky State, Ball State, Adams State, Lewis University, Alabama-Birmingham, Iupui-Forte Wayne, Ferris State, Loyola-Chicago, Bellarmine University, Cumberland College, California St. Stanislaus, and Grand Valley State.
The Salukis competed in unscored meets last weekend, the men at Illinois, the women at Indiana, highlighted by Adam Judge's record-breaking performance in 35 lb. weight throw. Judge shattered the SIU record with a toss of 68 feet, six inches, which stands as the 7th-best throw in the entire NCAA this year and is an NCAA provisional qualifying distance. Judge, a junior from Des Moines, Ia., joins Jeff Young (60m hurdles) as new SIU record holders so far this year and will have a chance to shine this weekend in his home state.
Other individual standouts for the Salukis recently have been sophomore Noa Beitler, who placed first in the 800 meter run last weekend, and Young, who won the 60 meter hurdles again Saturday, his fifth win in as many meets with the Salukis since transferring from Seton Hall.
SIU will return home on the weekend of February 15th to host the USA Track & Field Open at the Rec Center.
