Carbondale, Ill. -
Southern Illinois University (9-2) will takes its seven game winning streak into the Irish Classic baseball tournament on March 13-16 in San Antonio, Texas. The tournament, hosted by Notre Dame, will be held at Wolff Stadium.
"Because of the way that we're playing and the fact that we've already beat Notre Dame, even though they were short-handed, we expect to win. We've won seven straight games, we're playing well and I like our chances in San Antonio to win the tournament," said Dan Callahan, Saluki head coach.
SIU is off to its best start since 1990, a year when the Salukis started 18-2, won its last MVC title and played in the NCAA West I Regional.
"I thought we were pretty good going into the fall. A 9-2 start doesn't assure us of anything. It won't mean anything for this tournament or when we start the MVC, but I'd rather be 9-2 than 2-9. I thought we were capable of this kind of early season success. I like our club and we're talented. We have some questions on the mound to answer but I like what I see," added Callahan.
The Salukis will play single games on Wednesday (Arkansas-Little Rock - 2 p.m.), Thursday (Notre Dame - 1:30 p.m.), Friday (Creighton - 1:30 p.m.) and Saturday in the Championship (12 p.m.) or 3rd Place Game (4 p.m.).
