CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University men's and women's track and field teams will host the 2002 Saluki Spring Classic this weekend at McAndrew Stadium, their only scheduled outdoor home meet of the year.
The meet will feature 10 schools, including SIU, Missouri, Kansas and Illinois - all of whom's men's basketball teams are competing in the Sweet 16 this weekend. Other schools in the field include Central Michigan, Eastern Illinois, Indiana State, Missouri-Kansas City, Iowa and Northern Iowa.
The meet will kick off on Friday at 4:30 p.m. with the men's long jump and women's hammer throw. The meet will resume on Saturday, starting with the men's hammer throw at 10 a.m. and concluding with the women's javelin throw at 3:45 p.m.
The Saluki men will be getting another shot at in-state rival Illinois, who they competed against in Februrary in Champaign. That meet was unscored, but the Salukis' felt that their overall performance could have been much better. This time around, it will be a scored competition and SIU will be looking to top its top biggest regional rival.
The SIU women will be returning to action after a long layoff, competing in their first outdoor meet of the year. The Saluki women last competed February 23rd at the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships.
