CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University track and field athletes Adam Judge and Korto Dunbar were honored on Wednesday with Missouri Valley Conference "Athlete of the Week" selections.
Judge, a junior from Des Moines, Iowa, was named "Field Athlete of the Week" for the third time this year after he broke the SIU record in the hammer throw Saturday at the Arkansas Invitational with a toss of 204 feet. The old mark of 203 feet, 3 inches had been held for 17 years by Tom Smith. Judges exceeded 200 feet and met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard for the third meet in a row. Judge also owns the SIU record in the weight throw (69-4).
Dunbar, a sophomore from Greenbelt, Md., garnered female "Track Athlete of the Week" honors after placing first in the 100-meter hurdles Saturday at the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville Spring Classic, clocking in with a season-best time of 14.49 seconds. That time places the transfer from Seton Hall first on the MVC list this outdoor season.
Both athletes will be back in action this weekend, as Judge and the SIU men will travel to Los Angeles for the Mt. Sac Relays and Dunbar and the Saluki women will travel to Syracuse University for the Sycamore Invitational.
2002 SIU "MVC Athletes of the Week": Jeff Young (twice in 60m hurdles, once 110m hurdles), Adam Judge (once in weight throw, twice in hammer throw), Noa Beitler (once in 800m), Latrice Gray (once in high jump), Jaanus Uudmae (once in triple jump), Korto Dunbar (once in 100-meter hurdles).
