CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University men's track and field team will be sending 12 of its finest athletes to compete in the 75th Annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays this week, starting Wednesday and continuing through Saturday.
The prestigious event will be held at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas, and will feature competition between some of the nation's top collegiate, high school and independent athletes. Activities will kick off at noon on Wednesday with the men's 100-meter dash.
Saluki competitors will include sprinters Jeff Young, Marvin Primo and Willie Davis, distance runners Eli Baker, Doron Giat and Trapper Pressler, as well as Gaute Myclebust and Adam Judge in the throws, and Kellen Allen, Nyles Stuart and Jaanus Uudmae in the jumps. All of the Saluki competitors were selected based on their top times and places earlier this year.
The meet is chock-full of world-class athletes, highlighted by olympic medalist Allen Johnson, who will be joining SIU All-American Jeff Young in the 100-meter hurdles. Johnson took the gold in the 110-meter hurdles in the 1996 Olympics, and will face stiff competition from 2000 Olympic Silver Medalist Terrance Trammell. The 100-meter hurdles will start at 2:40 p.m. on Saturday.
Other Olympic medalist on display will include two time gold winner Maurice Greene, who placed first in the 100-meter dash at the 2000 Olympics and was part of the first-place 4x100-meter relay team at the 1996 games. He will run on the same 4x100 team as Jon Drummond, who was part of the United States gold medal winning 4x100 teams in 1996 and 2000.
SIU results will be updated daily on the Saluki website, www.siusalukis.com.
