Led by top finishes by Danielle Lawary, Korto Dunbar, Mariann Ahuna and Latrice Gray, the Southern Illinois University women's track and field team put together one of their better performances of the year Saturday, placing fourth out of 10 teams at the Indiana State Pacesetter Invitational.
The Salukis finished with 103 points in a very competitive meet, finishing behind the host and champion Sycamores (134), Southeast Missouri State (118) and Marquette (107). Eastern Illinois (52), Wisconsin-Milwaukee (27), Valparaiso (17), Northwestern (13), Wright State (12) and Bradley (10) rounded out the field.
Lawary, who is also a forward on the SIU basketball team, highlighted the day by placing first in the shot put with a toss of 46 feet, 2 3/4 inches. Lawary was competing in the event for the first time this season.
Coming off a Missouri Valley Conference "Track Athlete of the Week" selection for a first-place time of 14.48 in the 100-meter hurdles at the SIUE Invitational last weekend, Korto Dunbar outdid herself by clocking in at a career-best 14.27 seconds on Saturday to easily win for the fourth meet in a row.
Gray and Ahuna added their usual standout performances as well, as Gray won the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 6 1/2 inches and Ahuna won the triple jump with a leap of 39 feet, 6 1/2 inches.
SIU wound up scoring 22 points in the triple jump alone, as Inna Turevsky finished second in the event (39-1 3/4) and Hilla Medalia placed fourth (36-9 3/4).
Shaneka Williams added 14 points to the Saluki total by placing second in the 100-meter dash (12.09) and third in the 200-meter dash (25.68). Second-place times were also turned in by Kelsey Toussaint (400m, 56.83) and Katie Meehan (5,000m, 17:52.25).
The Saluki men and women will be back in action next weekend at the Drake Relays.
