Southern Illinois University will open the 2002 volleyball season with four games at the Southwest Texas State University Bobcat Classic in San Marcos, Texas on August 30-31. The 2002 volleyball schedule includes Mississippi State University of the Southeastern Conference at the Bobcat Classic, the Saluki/Best Inns Invitational and the usually tough Missouri Valley Conference slate including nationally ranked University of Northern Iowa.
"We have a challenging schedule and I think our non-conference schedule will pose challenges that our team is capable of handling and looking forward to. This schedule will prepare us for the MVC season, which will be tough," said head volleyball coach Sonya Locke.
SIU opens play against the Air Force Academy on Friday, August 30 at the Bobcat Classic. The Salukis will also face the University of North Texas (8/31) and host Southwest Texas State University (8/31) in addition to Mississippi State (8/30).
Southern Illinois will host the annual Saluki/Best Inns Invitational featuring Central Michigan University, Murray State University and the University of Missouri-Kansas City on September 6-7 in Davies Gym.
In addition to its MVC opponents, SIU will face non-conference opponents Southeast Missouri State University, the University of Tennessee-Martin, Western Illinois University and Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay at the Evansville Aces Invitational on October 11-12 in Evansville, Indiana.
