Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois University's Qiana Nelson has recieved the 2002 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars Award for excellence in athletics, academics and community activism. Nelson, one of 36 volleyball players honored, was named to the twelve-member second-team.
"Qiana is very deserving. It's nice for a player in our program to be nationally recognized for being a complete student-athlete. She has been consistent in the classroom and a three-year starter on the court," said Sonya Locke, Saluki head volleyball coach.
Nelson competed nationally with undergraduate female student-athletes for the award. All candidates must maintain a 3.20 grade point average, be an active member of an intercollegiate athletic team, demonstrate a record of service to the campus or community and be a student of color.
The junior from Kankakee, Ill. has a 3.35 grade point average in Management Information Systems, is a three-year starter and letterwinner for the Saluki volleyball team and has been very active in campus and community service. Her efforts include serving on the Student-Athlete Advisory Board since 2000, participating in the MVC/State Farm "Just Read" Program, the "Verizon Reads with the NCAA" program, Carbondale Junior Sports Day and as a Holiday Helper for local elementary schools.
