Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois University held its first scrimmage and full padded practice on Saturday, August 10 at the Saluki practice fields. The scrimmage last about an hour and was an opportunity for head coach Jerry Kill to look at his squad in full gear with officials working the scrimmage.
"The thing I was pleased with was that our guys didn't commit penalties in our first scrimmage. Our young guys did a good job, which was also pleasantly surprising. We played a lot of kids and it wasn't an ugly scrimmage. I really liked their attitude today. Even though our defense is young, they're talented, and they really got after it today," Kill added.
"We feel good about the first week of practice and we just hope that next week we can continue to teach football and not get anyone injured."
The Salukis will also scrimmage on Wednesday, August 14 at 3:30 and on Saturday, August 17 at 9:30 a.m. SIU opens the season with the first night game since 1973, when they host Kentucky Wesleyan on Thursday, August 29 at 7:00 p.m. in McAndrew Stadium.
