Kill Names Sambursky Starting QB for Home Opener

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois football coach Jerry Kill named his starting quarterback on Tuesday, elevating redshirt freshman Joel Sambursky to the first team.
Sambursky and fellow redshirt freshman Stanley Bryant have been competing for the starting job since the spring. Neither player has taken a snap at the collegiate level, but Sambursky will have the first opportunity to do so on Thursday night when SIU hosts Kentucky Wesleyan at 7 p.m. at McAndrew Stadium.
Sambursky was an all-state quarterback at Liberty (Mo.) High School two years ago. In three seasons as a starting quarterback, he led his team to a 27-5 record. He passed for 1,200 yards and rushed for 600 as a senior.
