CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University volleyball team will open the 2002 season at the CenturyTel/Roger Beasley Honda Premier Friday and Saturday hosted by Southwest Texas State.
The Salukis will play Air Force Academy at 9 a.m. Friday at the Strahan Coliseum. They will go up against Mississippi State at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, SIU will play the host team at 11 a.m. and the University of North Texas at 5 p.m.
Coach Sonya Locke expects this to be a fairly competitive tournament.
"We will need to work hard to put ourselves in a position to win," said Locke. "We will go and do our best, and hopefully, we'll have the best outcome."
First-team preseason Missouri Valley Conference pick Kristie Kemner will try to add to her career kills which rose to 1087 after last season.
The Salukis finished with an 11-19 overall record last season. Their opponents posted these records last year: Air Force (2-21), Mississippi State (8-17), North Texas (12-17), SWT (11-19).
