Meehan and Giat Lead Cross Country at Fast Start Open

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Highlighted by top times from Doron Giat and Katie Meehan, the Southern Illinois University men's and women's cross country teams kicked off the season in strong fashion Saturday at the Saluki Fast Start Open.
Each runner dominated in their respective race, as Giat clocked in at 19 minutes, 41.3 seconds to win the men's 6K run by 15 seconds, and Meehan had a time of 14 minutes, 42.98 seconds to win the women's 4K race by more than 30 seconds.
SIU also got strong performances from Marion native Eli Baker, who was second in the men's race with a time of 19 minutes, 56.86 seconds, and Marian Appiah-Kubi, who placed third in the women's race, clocking in at 15 minutes, 26.56 seconds in her first-ever collegiate cross country meet.
Tony LaChiana added a fourth-place time for the Saluki men (20:30.73), and Erin Simone placed seventh 15:55.33 for the women in the unscored meet.
SIU will return to action in two weeks, as they will travel to Columbia, Mo., on Sept. 14 to compete in the University of Missouri Cross Country Challenge.
