CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University running back Tom Koutsos underwent surgery Monday to have a plate inserted in his right wrist, which was broken on the second play of Saturday's game at Murray State.
The surgery, which was performed at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo., was successful, however the school's career rushing leader is likely out for the season. He is expected to remain in the hospital overnight and return to school on Tuesday.
Koutsos holds every major rushing record at SIU and has 3,747 career yards. The senior from Oswego, Ill., could petition the NCAA for a fifth year of eligibility.
In a similar situation last year, Saluki tight end Ryan McAllister suffered a knee injury in the third game of the season. After the season, the NCAA awarded him an extra year of eligibility.
