Martin, Tenn. - The Saluki volleyball team struggled defensively early against Tennessee-Martin Tuesday night. Although SIU tried its best to make the match go to five games, the Skyhawks defeated the Salukis in four (30-19, 24-30, 30-15, 30-28).
Head coach Sonya Locke commented although the Skyhawks hit well against SIU's block, poor defense contributed to the loss.
"They are a good hitting team, but we did not play our best defense by any means," said Locke. "We played like we were on a roller coaster tonight."
Junior setter Britten Follett (Marengo, Ill., Marengo HS) led the team with a .600 hitting percentage (six kills on 10 attacks). She dished out 35 assists, and collected 11 digs and one block assist.
Senior outside hitter Kristie Kemner (Quincy, Ill., Quincy Notre Dame HS) added 16 kills, one ace, and six digs. Lindsey Schultz (senior, MB, Valparaiso, Ind., Wheeler HS) notched nine kills and three blocks. Qiana Nelson (senior, OH, Kankakee, Ill., Kankakee HS) hit .250 with eight kills. Lisa Ciucci (junior, DS, Portage, Mich., Portage Northern HS) nabbed eight digs.
The Salukis (7-4) will host Indiana State Friday night at 7 p.m. The Sycamores are 5-5 overall and 0-2 in Missouri Valley Conference action. SIU will face the Redbirds of Illinois State Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. in Davies Gym. The Redbirds are 0-2 in conference play and are 3-6 overall.
