Des Moines, Iowa - The Southern Illinois volleyball team captured its third Missouri Valley Conference win by sweeping Drake in three games Friday night at the Drake Knapp Center, 30-19, 30-21, 30-18.
"We play a faster paced game," commented coach Sonya Locke. "When we controlled the tempo, things went well for us."
Senior outside hitter Kristie Kemner (Quincy, Ill., Quincy Notre Dame HS) moved into second place in the SIU all-time dig list with her 10 on the night. She now has 1,086 for her career. Kemner led the team with 21 kills on 42 attempts with seven errors for a .333 efficiency.
Locke mentioned Qiana Nelson played a good defensive game for the Salukis.
Nelson (senior, OH, Kankakee, Ill., Kankakee HS) tallied 10 digs and nine kills. Lisa Ciucci (junior, OH, Portage, Mich., Portage Nothern HS) also added 10 digs.
Middle blocker Lindsey Schultz (senior, Valparaiso, Ind., Wheeler HS) notched 11 kills and three blocks. Carrie Shephard (sophomore, MB, Overland Park, Kan., Blue Valley North HS) was four for eight for a .500 hitting efficiency. She also earned two kills against the Bulldogs.
"Carrie didn't get as many swings, but she was the most efficient," said Locke.
SIU travels to Omaha, Neb. to take on conference foes Creighton tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
