Salukis Lose First Match of the Season

Carbondale, Ill. - The Southern Illinois volleyball team finished runner-up to an evenly matched UMKC team in the Saluki/Best Inns Invitational Saturday evening in a marathon match of five games. Game scores were 30-21, 24-30, 27-30, 30-20, 11-15.
SIU tallied 69 kills on 205 attacks for a .200 hitting efficiency to UMKC's 72 kills on 210 attacks for a .190 hitting percentage. UMKC recorded 68 assists, and SIU had 66. Both teams served eight aces. UMKC dug 91 of SIU's attacks, and SIU had 89 digs to their credit.
Setter Britton Follett (junior, Marengo, Ill., Marengo HS) was selected to the all-tournament team. She compiled 55 assists, seven digs, and seven kills on 19 attempts with no errors for a .368 hitting percentage. Outside hitter Kristie Kemner (senior, Quincy, Ill., Quincy Notre Dame HS) recorded 19 attacks and 24 digs to move her up to 41 double-doubles for her career. Other members of the all-tournament team were Nikki Wong (Murray State), Emily Lovejoy (Central Michigan), Kristy Waltemeyer (UMKC), Katie Keating (UMKC), and MVP Lindsey Zerr (UMKC).
Saluki senior middle blocker Lindsey Schultz (Valparaiso, Ind., Wheeler HS) totaled 20 kills on 37 attacks with three errors for a .459 hitting percentage. She led the team in ace serves with five and tallied five blocks. Freshman Marissa Washington (MB, Theodore, Ala., McGill-Toolen Catholic) was credited with eight blocks.
Defensively, Qiana Nelson (senior, OH, Kankakee, Ill., Kankakee HS), and Lisa Ciucci (senior, Libero, Portage, Mich., Portage Northern HS), dug 17 attacks apiece, and Erica Miller (sophomore, DS, Middlebury, Ind., Northridge HS) collected 16.
Tuesday, the Salukis will be back in action at home hosting Southeast Missouri State University at 7 p.m. in Davies Gymnasium.
