PEORIA, Ill. - Freshman Ashley Saverine's fourth career double-double (13 kills, 10 digs) and career-high .414 hitting percentage unfortunately wasn't enough to stop SIU (6-16, 2-8 MVC) from suffering a 30-27, 30-18, 32-30 sweep by Bradley (9-14, 5-5 MVC) in a crucial MVC match on Thursday night in Peoria.
"We were hoping to win this match to have a better chance of controlling our destiny, but now we have to hope for some upsets and keep trying to notch some wins," said Sonya Locke, SIU head coach. "We're still learning and keep missing out on our opportunities. We have to get better. This doesn't get any easier with #13 Northern Iowa on Friday and matches with SMS and Wichita State next weekend. No one expects us to win tomorrow, but we have to go in there and try to earn a huge win."
Saverine committed just one error in 29 attempts in racking up 13 kills. Marissa Washington (.312, four blocks) and Haley Hann each added seven kills in the match. Jene' Pulliam (nine digs), Kelly Harman (.300, three digs) and Erin Strathdee (four blocks) each chipped in four kills in the loss.
The Salukis hit .228, its second best performance of the season, but allowed the Braves to hit .346 as a team. SIU had more digs (41 to 39) and blocks (6 to 5), while Bradley totaled more kills (60 to 44) and aces (6 to 5) in the match.
Bradley was led by Jenna Passman (16 kills, .538), Lindsay Stalzer (14 kills, .400) and Briony Hammet (11 kills, .364).
SIU faces #13 Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls at West Gym at 7 p.m. on Friday.
