SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Southern Illinois University (3-12, 0-5 MVC) was held to just an .095 hitting percentage by SMS, while the Bears (11-3, 4-0 MVC) hit .312 and swept the Salukis 30-23, 30-20, 30-22 on Friday night in an MVC match in Springfield, Mo. SIU is winless in MVC play and has been swept 3-0 in four of its five MVC losses.
The .095 hitting percentage (37 kills, 26 errors, 116 attempts) included a .000 hitting percentage (12 kills, 12 errors, 39 attempts) in game three of the match and was the sixth time this season that SIU has been held under .100 in a match.
Junior Carrie Shephard (9 kills, two blocks), sophomore Marissa Washington (7 kills, three blocks, .429) and freshmen Ashley Saverine (7 kills, four digs) and Holly Marita (30 assists, 11 digs) led the Salukis.
SMS hit .312 (46 kills, 12 errors, 109 attempts), led by Erin Murphy (.462, 7 kills), Katie Werges (.400, 14 kills) and Linette White (.353, 9 kills). Werges' 14 kills led the Bears. SMS outblocked SIU 14 to five, led by White's seven blocks.
The Salukis will attempt to earn their first MVC win against Wichita State on Saturday, Oct. 4 in Wichita, Kans. at 7 p.m.
