WICHITA, Kans. - Southern Illinois (3-13, 0-6 MVC) was swept by an MVC opponent for the fifth straight match when the Salukis lost 30-22, 30-17, 30-21 to Wichita State on Saturday in Wichita, Kans. The Shockers (11-5, 4-1 MVC) held SIU under a .100 hitting percentage (.098) in the match, and became the seventh team to hold SIU under .100 this season. The Salukis have been swept in five of six MVC losses and are 0-6 in the Valley for the first time in school history.
"We made a lot of hitting errors and just didn't hit a lot of good shots. Our lack of passing hurt us ... we didn't get good balls to hit and couldn't see the block well," said Sonya Locke, SIU head coach. "We didn't have anyone on tonight and tried to get someone going, but it didn't happen. We got beat and that's the bottom line."
While SIU struggled with a .098 hitting percentage (29 kills, 21 errors, 82 attempts), including a -.150 (8 kills, 11 errors, 20 attempts) in game three, Wichita State hit an incredible .433 (50 kills, 11 errors, 90 attempts) as a team. The Shockers also outblocked SIU 10 to three and had seven aces to just two for the Salukis.
Junior Carrie Shephard (7 kills) led SIU for the second straight night. Freshmen Ashley Saverine (6 kills, 6 digs), Haley Hann (4 kills, .375) and Holly Marita (29 assists) were the other Saluki leaders.
WSU was led by Sara Younes (.563, 12 kills) Darci Vohs (11 kills, .588), Jen Ray (8 kills, .429, four blocks) and Elizabeth Meyers (7 kills, .333, three blocks), who all had high hitting percentages.
SIU will host Tennessee-Martin on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Davies Gym. The Salukis will be looking to snap a four-game losing streak. The match will feature a Maytag washer and dryer being given away on SIU Faculty/Staff Night.
