Volleyball Falls To Evansville 3-1

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Southern Illinois (7-21, 3-13 MVC) received double-double performances from Kelly Harman, Ashley Saverine and Holly Marita, but it wasn't enough to keep the Salukis from losing 24-30, 24-30, 30-12, 39-41 to Evansville (7-21, 2-14 MVC) on the road Friday in Evansville, Ind.
The Salukis hit just .169, but held the Purple Aces to only .108. SIU also had more kills (67 to 54), assists (61 to 45), aces (11 to 8) and digs (87 to 62), but were outblocked 20 to 15 in the match.
Harman's ninth double-double (15 kills and 14 digs) led three Salukis with double figure kills. Marissa Washington had a career-high 13 kills and hit a team-high .435 (13 kills, 3 errors, 23 attempts), while Saverine had 11 kills and 14 digs for her seventh double-double. Marita's 48 assist and 10 digs led to her eighth double-double of the season.
Carrie Shephard added nine kills, nine digs and eight blocks for SIU. Haley Hann chipped in nine kills and four blocks and Washington contributed seven digs and seven blocks. Erica Miller led the defense by tying her career-high of 19 digs, which she set in the first meeting with Evansville. Monica Laird fell just one dig short of a double-double with 10 assists and nine digs.
Megan Spurlock's 13 kills led Evansville. Sarah Treadway (12 kills, 11 digs), Erica Haukap (11 kills, 14 digs) and Anna Nies (32 assists, 12 digs) each had double-doubles for the Purple Aces.
The Salukis will wrap up the 2003 season with home matches against Drake and Creighton on Friday and Saturday respectively in Davies Gym at 7 p.m.
